Gandía (in Valencian and officially, Gandia) is a municipality and Spanish city in the province of Valencia, in the Valencian Community. The town, located next to the Mediterranean Sea and capital of the La Safor region, is a tourist destination. The municipal term has a population of 74,562 inhabitants.
The city of Gandía is divided into districts, and these into neighborhoods. The official name used by the city council is the districts, but the citizens unofficially subdivide these districts into smaller entities.
The districts according to the Gandía City Council are eleven, and according to their Valencian name they are: Beniopa, Benipeixcar, Center Històric, Corea, Raval, Santa Anna, Marxuquera, Roís de Corella-Hospital i Adjacents, Grau-Venècia-Rafalcaïd, Plaça El · Lyptic-República Argentina and Platja.
- The Walls of Gandia
Considered as cultural and historical heritage of Spain, the Walls of Gandia are one of the elements that we recommend you visit in the city. Despite being practically disappeared, their remains will leave you fascinated.
In the 16th century, these walls surrounded the entire historic center of the city and were responsible for protecting the city from possible attacks. It can be interesting to take a tour to discover the different remaining parts while getting to know the city at the same pace. A visit that you cannot miss on your visit to Gandia!
- Farmhouse of the Duc
Located in the middle of the Marjal, the Alquería del Duc is a medieval fortification of Muslim origin that currently houses a center where courses related to tourism and gastronomy are taught.
It has a beautiful façade in which some elements of its original state can still be seen, in addition to conserving its loopholes and the watchtower. It is currently known as the Tourism Development Center, and the courses that are taught are mainly dedicated to supplying the needs of the market. When you have finished your visit, you can go to the Ullal, a wetland that is a short distance away and has beautiful fauna and flora.
- Bairen Castle
Also known as the Castillo de San Juan, this impressive monument was once the most important fortification in the defense of La Safor. Being at the top of a morning, it allowed excellent control over the entire area.
Having been largely destroyed due to battles, only remnants of the castle currently remain. You will be able to differentiate pieces of walls, gates and towers that can be seen even from the beach. Access to this impressive place is done comfortably through a path; once you get to the top, the views over the sea will leave you speechless.
